Bill Hagerty Slams Rep. Cooper for Embracing Impeachment

Bill Hagerty, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee, criticized Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN-05) in a Tuesday statement for joining Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) in calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Hagerty, President Trump’s former U.S. ambassador to Japan, said it was “disappointing” to see Cooper embrace “the Squad and other radical liberals’ call for impeachment.”

“A clear majority of House Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and ‘The Squad,’ are calling for impeachment, and now that includes both of Tennessee’s Democrat Congressman,” Hagerty said in a press release. “It’s disappointing to see both Jim Cooper and Steve Cohen join in tearing down President Trump, rather than working with him to make life better for Tennessee families.”

“As your Senator, I will help President Trump keep winning for Tennessee families, and I will always stand with him against the radical socialist agenda that seeks to destroy our conservative values,” he added.

The statement comes in response to the growing number of moderate Democrats who are coming out in support of pursuing an impeachment inquiry. As reported Tuesday morning, two Minnesota Democrats representing suburban swing districts released statements in support of impeachment.

The growing support for impeachment is based on allegations that President Trump pressured the president of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. Trump allegedly threatened to withhold military aid if President Volodymyr Zelensky didn’t comply.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Democratic Caucus during a closed-door meeting Tuesday that she is ready to move on a formal impeachment inquiry.

“It would be my intention with the consent of this caucus … to proceed with an impeachment inquiry,” Pelosi said, according to sources who spoke with Politico. “He is asking a foreign government to help in his campaign, that is a betrayal of his oath of office.”

Pelosi instructed top committee chairs to compile their strongest evidence for impeachment, and she’s expected to make a formal announcement on an impeachment probe late Tuesday.

Although I can understand why many Democrats want to impeach Trump since I am no fan of his, I have mixed feelings about such a move. It could backfire and make Trump look like a victim in the eyes of many Americans.

Democrats would do much better to push their domestic agenda of the Green New Deal, affordable medical care, etc., instead of wasting their time on Chuck Schumer’s and Nancy Pelosi’s anti-Russian and anti-North Korean conspiracy theories. Also, the Democratic leadership should break away from pro-Israeli AIPAC which is guilty of persecuting Palestinians. The people who elected the Democrats to the House in 2018 want their DOMESTIC agenda instead of wasting time on impeachment or on efforts to out-hawk Trump on Russia and North Korea. The impeachment attempt could hurt Democrats including many progressive insurgent Democrats whom I support.
